Untouched by glaciers, the hills capped with loess, the area is rich in game and flora. The digs at Graham Cave show that the area has been inhabited for at least 10,000 years. ATVs have found a home at Finger Lakes, and Pine Ridge provides camping for hikers and hunters. East of the capital in Jefferson City, Painted Rock offers a vista of the Osage River Valley, while Ben Branch Lake is nestled in a quiet valley. Some of Missouri's best wines are produced in and around Hermann.
