Class V rapids on the St. Francis River provide a playground for kayakers when the water is up. Local groups put in at Millstream Gardens and take out at Silver Mines Recreation Area. Nearby is the Amidon Shut-ins and the Audubon Trail for hikers.

Several state parks offer better facilities, as well as interpretive trails. Hawn is noted for its pine savannahs and a native azalea nestled under the dogwood and red bud trees. Trail of Tears marks the passage of the Cherokee Nation into Missouri. St Joe SP provides off road enthusiasts a huge sandbox, and Sam A. Baker honors a pioneer in park development.

Wappapello Lake Project includes Scout camps and a state park, as well as campgrounds built by the Corps of Engineers. A boardwalk tour highlights the Mingo National Wildlife Refuge which contains lakes, swamps and Duck Creek Conservation Area.
