St Francois State Park

Located on the banks of the Big River, the 2,735 acre Park includes the Pike Run Hills which provided refuge for moonshiners and, during the Civil War, Sam Hildebrand who took revenge upon the Union troops after they murdered his family. Hikers will enjoy the trail along Coonville Creek, a clear running stream with pools that provide refuge for over 18 species of fish, and a diverse flora that includes the rare Queen of the Prairie growing in the swampy bogs.
